ParticipantHi all,
It’s been about a month since I received and started using my Capital One Secured MasterCard. Today, my fingers were itching to apply for the Cap One Journey student card that is basically a 1.25% cash back rewards card. I just really wanted a rewards card because I have been using my Secured card for purchases a lot and even that 1.25% cash back is better than nothing. Not that surprisingly, because I have read that this Journey Student card is easy to get approved for and my secured card account is in good standing, I was instantly approved for a $300 credit limit! Since this is an unsecured credit card with no annual fee and is in the Credit Steps program (credit line increase after 5 months or so, up to “maximum” credit line of $750), I will be keeping this card and will cancel the Secured card in about 9 months since I already paid the annual fee for it. Now I have two revolving credit tradelines to build credit, and I should be able to get the prime student cards in about a year.
Now although the Journey card is marketed towards students, the application does not specifically ask for college information. I am a college student, but my guess is that other people can also be approved for this card.
Despite reading some horror stories about Capital One’s customer service, my whole experience with them has been very smooth and their online banking works very well for me (payments get posted within a day, purchases posted about 2 days, overall everything is pretty fast). I especially like that Capital One does not charge foreign transaction fees, and I want to grow with Capital One and eventually get their new 1.5% Cash Rewards card that requires excellent credit. Therefore, I will be keeping my Journey card for years to come because it allows me to build a history with Capital One and it does not have an annual fee. Capital One will always be my “first love” because they extended credit to me while no one else did, and I will always have a soft spot for them.

ParticipantLOL, next round is on me!
I just checked Capital One online banking today and my new account is set up already, but I can’t link it to online banking until I have the whole account number from the card. Can’t wait to receive it, yay!!

ParticipantWooot! My card arrived today 11/2 and I have linked it to my online banking account already. I love the Capital One Perk Central (for all credit cards eligible for No Hassle Rewards) site, which offers bonus cash back (some are 15%!) for many retailers and some local stores too! I am so excited LOL!
